Hammers return to the top

The Lakeside Hammers returned to the top of the Sky Sports Elite League with a win away at King’s Lynn on Wednesday.

Riding in their third meeting since the death of their captain Lee Richardson the Hammers led from as early as heat three and were inspired by a paid 17 point return from Davey Watt as well as a season’s best away performance from Kim Nilsson, who scored paid 14 points.

A delighted Hammers Co Promoter Jon Cook commented after the superb win against the team from Norfolk saying: “Credit to all the boys for a magnificent team effort. The character they are showing is astonishing. All six lads played a full part in the victory and it came despite engine failures for both PK (Peter Karlsson) and Robert (Mear).”

As an indication of the Hammers dominance each of their six riders had at least one paid win whereas King’s Lynn only had three riders who achieved paid wins. They were led by Niels Kristian Iversen, who dropped only one points (to Davey Watt in heat ten), and their reserve Kevin Wolbert who had two wins.

The Hammers now need to concentrate on the Cup as they face the Coventry Bees home and away over the next few days. The first leg will take place at the Bees home track in Brandon this Friday with the second leg at the Arena Essex Raceway, the home of the Lakeside Hammers, the following evening. Saturday’s home leg will see the parade of riders at 7.45pm and the first race at 8pm.
