No joy for Hammers

The Hammers endured a night to quickly forget as they fell to this defeat against Swindon Robins at home in front of the sky cameras on Monday evening.

The home side had done well to pull back level after nine races as the Robins had taken an early lead – but collapsed over the course of the next three races largely in the main to the misfortune that befell Peter Karlsson.

Karlsson suffered whilst the chequered flag was in sight in heat eleven, grinding to a halt as the Robins pairing of Hans Andersen and Jason Doyle sped past him. He suffered in the very next race too, pulling up whilst in a good position exiting the second turn as Doyle and Nick Morris pulled clear. The damage was capitulated when Robert Mear was excluded for bringing down Doyle, with the referee awarding the Robins a 5-0.

So, a 15-2 advantage to the Robins was not what the doctor ordered for the home side and the Robins rubbed salt into the wounds by inflicting two further advantages in closing the meeting.

Despite some good action in Karlsson’s other completed rides – a brilliant pass over Andersen in heat five and a pass in the last race to deny the unbeaten Batchelor a maximum – it was otherwise a night to forget for the home side who must quickly re-group with a chance to make amends in their next home meeting against King’s Lynn this Friday,
