Brummies seen off

The Hammers saw off their play-off rivals Birmingham with what turned out to be a fairly comfortable victory on Friday evening at the Arena Essex Raceway.

There was plenty of good racing for the fans to enjoy, particularly from number one Davey Watt, who put on a superb display of overtaking despite nursing an injury.

Watt’s antics started in the opening when he swooped past Bjarne Pedersen and Martin Smolinski to take the lead – only for Smolinski to lift existing the final corner and dump the Aussie in the fence. The race was awarded, with Watt and race leader Stuart Robson earning their side a 5-1.

The action came thick and fast and the Hammers extended their lead further when Jonas Davidsson teamed up with Justin Sedgmen to show a clean pair of heels to Sebastian Ulamek. The “Sedge-Hammer” was in good form all night with only a fall in heat seven spoilt what was an otherwise immaculate race card.

An early tactical outing for Pedersen in heat five was nullified when Peter Karlsson hit the front and when the Brummies lost their chance on their second double outing when Ashworth fell in heat twelve the meeting was effectively decided.

Watt wasn’t finished, though, as he produced another third to first party piece over Pedersen and Ulamek in heat thirteen before the evening finished with Karlsson getting in on the act, rounding off the night with a final turn swoop to pass Ulamek and ensure the home side finished with a heat advantage.
