Hammers confirm date for Lee

The Lakeside Hammers can confirm that the top riders in the world will be at the Arena Essex Raceway on Friday 28th September to race for, and remember, Lee Richardson.

All funds generated will go towards the trust fund for his wife Emma and three sons.

The field will be led by World Champion Greg Hancock and will include Lee’s closest racing rivals with the final invites to be decided after consultation with Lee’s family and further riders to be announced over the weeks and months ahead.

Admission will be by Donation and the club have set a minimum figure of £10 for all adults and concessions and just £1 for kids aged 16 and under.

The Hammers Co Promoter Jon Cook explained: “This is a sad week with Lee’s funeral on Thursday and we feel that by September it will be our chance to remember and celebrate Lee, the Speedway rider. I will be working with Alun Rossiter and Lee’s brother Craig to put the final field together. We want to include those riders closest to Lee and to make it a night to remember.

The field will be worth £20 plus admission at today’s prices and I know many of the Speedway family who can afford it will donate that sort of sum but we didn’t want to price anyone out of attending and for those travelling a long distance or struggling in the current climate we hope a ‘tenner’ is affordable so they can attend.”

Cook continued: “The meeting will be an individual meeting and all money raised will go in the fund. I would like to place on record our thanks to Lesley and Tony Woodruff for providing the Raceway free of charge and Lakeside Speedway will be covering all other costs on the night.

We are working on the possibility of another meeting elsewhere in the UK in October to feature all the teams that Lee had ridden for and next season the Memorial Meeting will switch from Lakeside to Swindon, with the meeting marking the close of fundraising.”
