Pirates sent packing

The Vortex Hammers romped to this 60 point haul against the Poole Pirates to ensure that they started the month of June with two successive home wins.

The home side followed up their win over Coventry on Monday night with an equally impressive performance, seeing off a Pirates side that lost Pzremylsaw Pawlicki after two races after a heavy fall in seven. It was a sad end to the meeting for the young Polish star who had looked very impressive in securing an opening heat three win in passing Seb Ulamek.

The Vortex Hammers had a real success story in reserve Richard Lawson who secured his first ever maximum in Hammers colour with a superb paid twelve points haul. Likewise, there was an encouraging opening performance from his new partner at reserve, Kevin Doolan, who secured a paid seven score.

Pirates boss Neil Middleditch threw in World Champion Chris Holder for a tactical ride as early as heat five but the Aussie was thwarted by Piotr Swiderski. A second bite at the tactical cherry in heat seven also failed to come to fruition when the aforementioned Pawlicki crashed out.

With Pirates already operating the rider replacement facility and now an extra rider down, the home side were firmly in the driving seat to complete a comprehensive win. The pick of the race action came in heat six when Lewis Bridger rode a typically determined race to round Dawid Stachyra and repeated the dose on the same opponent five heats later.

Come heat eleven and Holder was still without a race win – and he was left in the same position upon closure of that race when fellow countryman Davey Watt took the chequered flag.

The World Champion did get some revenge in the closing heats when he led Poole’s only 5-1 with Maciej Janowski in heat thirteen. He finished the evening with a race win over Bridger but by this time the Hammers were off celebrating a large Elite League win and further fuel the optimism that surrounds their play-off aspirations heading into the summer.
